The Voice Season 2 top 4

“The Voice of the Philippines” wraps up its successful second season with the much-anticipated showdown of its top four artists, who are vying to win the grand title in the singing competition’s Live Showdown Saturday and Sunday night (Feb 28 at Mar 1) on ABS-CBN.

Who among Team Apl’s Alisah Bonaobra, Team Sarah’s Jason Dy, Team Bamboo’s Rence Rapanot, and Team Lea’s Leah Patricio will get the highest percentage of public votes to be hailed as the show’s second grand winner?

As the four artists prepare to go head-to head in this weekend’s finale, coaches Apl, Sarah, Bamboo, and Lea coaches are also busy campaigning, especially on social media to encourage viewers and fans to support their bets.

The winner will receive a trophy designed and crafted by contemporary artist Leeroy New, a house and lot worth P2 million, a music instrument package worth P100,000, shopping spree and Asian tour package worth P350,000, a business package worth P1 million, a new car worth P1 million, a recording and management contract with MCA Music, and P2 million in cash.

“Singing has brought me the happiest and most painful things in my life, but it also brings me hope that I can change my life and my family’s,” said ‘singing tindera’ Alisah, who hopes to go back to school and help her family out of poverty.

Jason, meanwhile, wants to achieve his longtime dream of creating a name in the industry. “It feels great to be a haranista, but I feel happier when I sing on a bigger stage because I am able to convey what I feel to more people through singing.”

Singer-farmer and four-chair turner Rence gears up to win the competition to encourage the younger generation of Filipinos to listen to OPM. “All I want is for people to love our own music, and I’m ready to fight for that,” he said.

Power belter Leah might have joined a lot of singing contests before, but now she is even more determined to build a successful singing career. “This time, I will fight for my family and for the future of my kids so I can provide for their needs,” she shared.

Watch the four artists clash this weekend, as well as the breathtaking performances from special guests Jed Madela, Charice, Joey Ayala, and Dulce.

Balitang America's Rommel Conclara interviews ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus on her participation
Dance is dangerous, joyous,
sexual, holy, disruptive,
contagious, it breaks the rules.
It can happen anywhere, anytime,
with anyone and everyone, and
it’s free. Dancing insists we take
up space, we go there together
in community. Dance joins us
and pushes us to go further and
that is why it’s at the center of
One Billion Rising.

– Eve Ensler, founder, One Billion Rising

Hundreds of women, men and girls danced in unity with risings against violence towards women and girls in 207 countries around the world

Women’s issues were at front and center at last Sunday’s 87th Academy Awards when Oscar Best Supporting Actress winner Patricia Arquette ended her acceptance speech with a call for wage equality and equal rights for women. Meanwhile, prior to the awards ceremony, Best Actress nominee Reese Witherspoon called for a more dignified line of questioning on the red carpet rather than just what women are wearing by sharing an Instagram post with the hashtag #AskHerMore.

TFC was the only Filipino broadcast media acknowledged by organizers at the event

As March – National Women’s History Month – approaches, activities promoting awareness and understanding of women’s achievements, rights, ideas, and deserved place in society seem to trigger a lot of conversation.  Just this February, women from over 200 countries gathered en masse in an ongoing annual awareness and advocacy campaign to end violence against women and girls.  ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) showed solidarity with the global movement by representing and supporting the campaign in San Francisco City Hall last February 12 which was organized and sponsored by V-DAY, City and County of San Francisco, Filipina Women’s Network (FWN), San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, and the San Francisco Office of the District Attorney.

Filipina community leaders represent at the One Billion Rising in San Francisco

This movement is called “One Billion Rising”, a call to action based on the statistic that one in three women in the planet, or roughly one billion women and girls, will be beaten or raped during their lifetimes.  Each year, the campaign focuses on a different theme: last year it was “Justice”.  This year, it is “Revolution” because as movement founder Eve Ensler said, if societies want to stop attacks on women, it’s the systems that need to change.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee addresses the crowd that gathered at City Hall for One Billion Rising

The San Francisco event – attended by Mayor Ed Lee, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, officers and members of the sponsoring organizations, grassroots activists and hundreds of community leaders from various fields and their families – was a multicultural event that united in spirit with various “risings” around the world: from Freedom Park in Manila, Philippines to the Malaika School of Girls in Congo, to the men reading Eve Ensler’s piece “Man Prayer” in Sante Fe, New Mexico, to the dancing Southeast Asian domestic workers in Hong Kong, to the families that gathered to “Drum! Dance! Rise!” at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Marble Arch in London, the city square of Arco, Italy, and St Kilda Foreshore in Melbourne, Australia, and to star-studded events in the five boroughs of New York, to mention a few.

Part of the large crowd that packed San Francisco City Hall; women participants express what their revolution is
“Filipino women have been very much a part of the community in San Francisco since it’s very diverse,” said ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus in an interview with Rommel Conclara of Balitang America. “We are one with them in joining this cause in rising against violence towards women in general.”

“Our work isn’t done yet,” said FWN CEO and Founder Marily Mondejar. “There’s still more that we have to do but every year we gather so that we can think about what we have done, what we still need to do and what issues we still need to solve.”

LUCKY STARS

Eleven Lucky Stars from the hit game show “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” already tried their luck bargaining with the Banker but failed to take home the million-peso jackpot prize and nine are still up to make a deal of a lifetime in the coming weeks.

So far, veteran actor Rez Cortez has won the biggest amount of P450,000, while sexy actress Yam Concepcion has brought home the lowest amount of one peso. Who among remaining Lucky Stars Arlene Muhlach, Baron Geisler, Bianca Manalo, Bonito, Epy Quizon, Eric Nicolas, Long Mejia, Ramon Christopher, and Ryan Bang will emerge as the first millionaire this season?

Since the show returned on air two weeks ago, KDOND instantly became a hit among viewers as it consistently beats rival in the ratings game. Aside from the tension-filled viewing experience, host Luis Manzano’s funny antics, and the show’s new format, which is the first time to be done among all ‘Deal’ franchises around the world, another interesting element that viewers watch our for this season is the Lucky Stars dynamics.

The celebrity briefcase holders noticeably have a good rapport with each other despite their different states as celebrities.

“We are one whole family in KDOND. We just have fun every taping,” said Nina Jose.

“We all had our adjustment period but I never expected to be this close to my co-Lucky Stars, such as Kuya Monching and Kuya Epi,” shared Matt Evans.

“I was able to bond with all of them. Everybody is so nice and helpful. There was a time when my eyelashes got detached and Donna and the rest of the girls helped me fix it. I was really touched. They give me their all-out support and they really take care of me,” Melanie Marquez recounted.

Keep watching “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal,” weekday afternoons, 5 PM, on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold.

The Cinema One Originals 2014 film “That Thing Called Tadhana,” has lived up to its hype as it reached the P100 million mark on Sunday (February 15), only less than two weeks since it hit theaters nationwide.

JM de Guzman, lead actor of the movie, was speechless and could not believe that the film is a box office hit, when he was asked of his reaction during the media interview at the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta with Jeepney TV on Valentine's Day (February 14).

(JM de Guzman at the Jeepney TV's Valentine Show in Clark Field Pampanga)

The Cinema One Originals breakthrough movie of Antoinette Jadaone is tagged as the “Ultimate Hugot Film” of the year, with thousands praising it for its simple yet exceptional storytelling. Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman star in the romantic-comedy hit, which bagged the Audience Choice Award and Best Actress Award for Panganiban last November at the Cinema One Originals film festival.

The sought after filmmaker has been making waves in the industry since her critically acclaimed Cinema One Originals 2011 entry, “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay,” which won six awards at the Cinema One Originals film festival. For the 2014 film festival, Jadaone submitted “That Thing Called Tadhana,” which she calls as her dream film. Its screenplay received its first seal of approval even before it was filmed when it won the prestigious 2014 Don Carlos Memorial Palanca Awards for Literature where Jadaone won third place.

Jadaone’s romantic film was picked up for nationwide distribution by Star Cinema, ABS-CBN’s film outfit as its pre-Valentine’s offering for the year.

“That Thing Called Tadhana” is a story of two Filipino strangers, Mace (Angelica Panganiban) and Anthony (JM de Guzman) who meet in Rome and eventually travel together up north to Baguio and Sagada in search for the answer to the question: “Where do broken hearts go?”

Mission Possible

Broadcast journalist Julius Babao helps people with seemingly unachievable dreams in his new public service program every Monday afternoon in “Mission Possible,” which is part of ABS-CBN’s new weekday current affairs block.

As the program’s title states, the mission is never impossible if one is willing to work for it. The effort would come from the case studies’ end with the show being the anchor to help them attain their goals.

On Monday (Feb 16), “Mission Possible” tries to help ex-convict Luis Crisostomo start his life anew. Companies have been rejecting the 52-year-old not for his age but because of his past as a convicted felon.

Luis finished college but ended up being a construction worker. He spent over 15 years in jail for qualified theft and estafa for failing to return his employer’s wallet and spent the cash amounting to P5,000, while his friend allegedly used the credit card.

Although he faces social stigma, he is determined to prove himself and provide for his family. Will Luis and Julius succeed in their mission?

Also part of ABS-CBN’s new weekday current affairs block are Karen Davila, Atty. Claire Castro, and K Brosas in “3-in-1” (Tuesdays), Atom Araullo in “RealiTV” (Wednesdays), Dyan Castillejo in “Sports U” (thursdays), and Anthony Taberna in “Tapatan ni Tunying” (Fridays).

Find out this Monday (Feb 16) in “Mission Possible” on ABS-CBN at 4:30 PM. For updates, visit its Facebook page (http://facebook.com/missionpossible.abscbn) and Twitter (@mission_abscbn).
